Yesterday was the big day. Turning the big three-four was just... normal. No amazing epiphanies from the sky, no life-changing decision suddenly made clear, no crossroads from which to choose my destined path, no fireworks (well, there was, actually, because my birthday fell on the eve of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, but you know what I mean), no fanfare. What? No parade to welcome me to the year before I turn the big three-five?
OK, then, let me create my own wind (like Tyra Banks would say, heh!). Being 34 marks the fifth anniversary of me becoming a mom and learning to love someone more than my own life. It is the sixth year of me being married to a wonderful man who helps me become a better person every day. It marks the 20th year of me meeting a few great girls who are my best friends to this day, who keep me grounded and close to God. It is the 11th year of me making a life-changing decision that brought me back home and into the life I am living now.
So you see, turning 34 is pretty darn cool!
On top of all that, I got a handwritten gift from my Angel. And eggs! It's a family/ Chinese tradition. Everyone in the household must have a hard-boiled egg to celebrate a birthday. The birthday girl has to eat two. It signifies longevity and happy years ahead.
I got the Leica V-Lux 20 from my love! I've been snapping pictures like crazy! Don't you worry, my Canon, I still love you. But Leica is new, so I will spend some quality time with her first. Street photography, here I come!
My parents are in town, so that's another great present! I took them shopping in the afternoon, and ended up buying clothes for the girls. I got this beautiful baju kebaya for Angelica. I love it! They didn't have Lauren's size, sigh. Next year, darling Lauren! I've always wanted one myself, but thought it too fussy to wear without any special occasion. That's what you have daughters for. You can dress them in the clothes that you cannot wear! And have them win the Pulitzer Prize for you! Seriously!
Such beautiful details. And the brooches! I love functional jewelry.
You know the Serenity Prayer? God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. And the prayer of St Francis? Lord make me an instrument of your peace, where there is hatred let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Those two.
I learnt these prayers in my teens... To make my 34th year really count, I'm going to live the two in my life, the first one for the dramas in my life (trust me, there is plenty!) and the second one for everything that's going on in our community and the world. Anything to make the world a better place, right? That's my dream.
