Happy Dumplings Festival!

Yesterday was the 5th day of the 5th month in the lunar calendar, which means it was the dumplings festival! I have been hankering after dumplings for a week, and finally got my fix last night!
These are dumplings made of glutinous rice with fillings of fatty pork pieces, chestnut, mushrooms and beans. Too yummy!

Angelica was all excited because I said the word festival, so I had to explain to her that it's just family gathering round for dinner and eating dumplings. Which means I also had to tell her the story behind the festival; about the scholar Qu Yuan who threw himself in the river out of sadness and anger for the corruption of his beloved country, and how villagers threw rice wrapped in bamboo leaves into the same river so that the fishes would not eat his body. And so the tradition of eating cooked rice wrapped in bamboo leaves was borne.

Hmmm, not a very glamorous tale for a 4-year-old. So she started to draw her own version of the dumpling festival.
Those are many dumplings on plates for the fishes, while Angelica, Lauren and myself are enjoying ice-cream. She also started to write a story about the dumpling that fell into the goose lake (it's a lake with a goose, mommy), but she got distracted by TV, so hopefully, we finish drawing that story tonight.
Happy eating!
